Ever since Daniel Craig hung up his 007 tux in 2021’s No Time to Die, fans of the James Bond film franchise have been throwing in their two cents on who’s the next best actor to follow the decades-long, iconic lineage of the most famous spy in the world. While the recent SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes temporarily halted the project’s development, the rumor mill is still up and running, with several A-listers supposedly vying for the part.
Here’s what we can expect: It’s worth noting that there are 2 possible scenarios in the next installment. If it’s a continuation of No Time to Die, then (spoiler alert) – there is no Bond. After his death, it is safe to assume that Lashana Lynch’s character “Nomi,” a new double-0 agent, takes his place. But if the creators decide to relaunch the franchise and fully create an entirely different timeline within the universe, then James Bond could potentially make a dramatic return, reimagined and revitalized, with a fresh actor stepping into the role.
Now, the question becomes: Who should be the next James Bond? We have a few names in mind:
Idris Elba
Idris Elba is one of the first names thrown in the hat as the next actor who could potentially fill in the shoes of Daniel Craig. It’s clear why Elba emerged as the earliest fan favorite – his charisma, presence, and acting chops. His portrayal of complex characters in both film and television, from “Luther,” and “Beasts of No Nation,” to “Pacific Rim,” have solidified his status as one of the main leading men in Hollywood. The idea of a suave, sophisticated, and action-ready Elba as Bond has generated immense excitement among fans.
Tom Hardy
Known for his versatility as an actor, Oscar nominee Tom Hardy is another top contender for Agent 007. He has portrayed a wide range of characters, from Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” and Eddie Brock in “Venom,” to his Oscar-nominated performance as John S. Fitzgerald in “The Revenant.” Hardy’s ability to seamlessly transform into different roles makes him an intriguing choice for the next Bond.
Richard Madden
Known for his role as Robb Stark in “Game of Thrones” and more recently as the dashing David Budd in “Bodyguard,” Golden Globe nominee Richard Madden has garnered acclaim for his acting talent and leading man appeal. His ability to portray complex characters with depth and vulnerability could bring a more nuanced Bond to the screen. And in a simple martini (shaken, not stirred) video posted on Instagram, fans immediately assumed that this was Madden hinting that he’s the next 007 agent.
Henry Golding
Henry Golding has made a name for himself with his roles in “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Gentlemen,” and “Snake Eyes.” He also proved his range in the 2019 queer drama “Monsoon,” shedding off his pretty boy demeanor in a raw, subtle, and layered performance. His effortless suave combined with his gentle yet powerful demeanor make him a potential contender for the role of James Bond.
Wild Card Pick: Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a noteworthy addition to this list. Known for his roles in “Kick-Ass,” “Godzilla,” and “Nocturnal Animals,” he has demonstrated the ability to take on diverse characters – oftentimes quirky and out-of-the-box. Taylor-Johnson’s charisma and acting prowess could make him a compelling choice to carry on the legacy of James Bond.
