Last week Disney surprised everyone when they announced that Moana 2, a sequel to the 2016 mega hit Moana, will be released on November 27, 2024.
It was quite a shock, because usually they announce movies a few years in advance, and this one is coming in nine months.
Originally, it was supposed to be a Disney Plus series (which was actually announced a few years back), but then they saw the materials and decided it’s too good for a show, so they changed their plans.
The movie is being directed by Dave Derrick Jr., who was involved in lots of animation movies like Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as the first Moana.
The original Moana is one of my favorite animation movies in the last decade.
It’s charming, colorful, magical, full of heart and emotions, and above all, beautiful!
Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, and the studio hopes that Auli’i Cravalho will reprise her role as Moana.
Moana is still a very popular movie. Not only did it gross over 650 million at the box office, but it’s still a streaming smash.
It was the most watched movie on streaming across every major platform in 2023, with over 11.6 billion minutes (!!)
They are also making a Live-Action remake with Dwayne Johnson, but that’s another discussion.
So, what can I say except you’re welcome??
