This March, Dune: Part 2 will finally arrive. It’s the sequel to Dune from 2021, and the second part of the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Sci-Fi epic.
With this movie, the adaptation of the first book will be complete. But the main question is – is this the end?
Director Denis Villeneuve said multiple times that he hopes to adapt the second novel, Dune Messiah. That novel brings the story of Paul Atreides to a close, and with that Villeneuve wants to complete the trilogy of films.
While there are more sequels after that, most people agree that they are too hard and weird. Adapting these books will be tough.
That way, Denis Villeneuve will have his own trilogy. Like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean, and so on.
It all depends on the box office numbers.
The first movie grossed 402 million dollars against a production budget of 165 million dollars. While it doesn’t seem that much, it’s still a huge achievement, especially in an era where tons of new IP are just collapsing at the box office.
Not to mention that the movie was released during Covid, and not only that, it was released on theaters and HBOmax simultaneously, and still grossed over 400 million, because it was a must-see event. I watched it myself on IMAX and was blown away.
Not to mention the fact that the movie received critical acclaim and won six awards at the 94th Academy Awards.
The hope is that all of these achievements will give the second movie a solid bump at the box office. One thing that really works in favor of this movie is the fact that it’s more action-focused than its predecessor. It’s the climax of the story, so it could attract more people who didn’t like the first movie and hoped for more action.
Regardless, that’s not the only project in development. They are currently working on a streaming show for Max, which is titled “Dune: Prophesy” and set 10,000 years before the events of Dune. It will focus on the Bene Gesserit order.
Let’s hope that Dune: Part 2 will live up to its box office potential!
